使用圆形主要是因为圆形井盖通过其中心的每个直径长度都是相同的，这样如果井盖被过往车辆卷起，其直径会比下面的井口略宽，井盖就不会掉入井口。
如果使用正方形的不锈钢井盖，由于正方形的对角线明显长于各边的长度，当井盖卷起时，容易沿着井口的对角线方向落入井内，造成安全隐患。如果井口是圆的或者明显小于井盖，方形的井盖就不会掉到水里。这涉及到材料的最大利用和节约。井口的用途取决于井口的大小。如果需要安装面积远大于井口的方形井盖，材料的利用和实用价值自然不会比直接使用圆形井盖更有效，既节省了井盖的材料，又保证了井口的安全。
